People Behind the Pie: Mikey Barraza

People Behind the Pie: Mikey Barraza

Pie Bar Superlative: Most Likely to be Running Around in the Kitchen

Vivian: What brought you to Woodstock?

Mikey: Beats me, ask my parents. I've been living here for 14 years and just recently realized how awesome Downtown Woodstock is, but I didn't get out much in school to explore it.

Vivian: Why did you decide to work with food?

Mikey: My first job was at Chick-Fil-A and that's where I really decided I loved being in the kitchen, but seeing my mom bake us banana bread, Amish bread, or her cranberry white chocolate crisps was what really steered me into baking. I worked at Alpine Bakery for almost 2 years and I fell in love with sweets. Now, I work here at Pie Bar and I love the atmosphere and the confidence that working here has given me, which has allowed me to experiment more with pastries. Every day has become a learning experience.

Vivian: What is your favorite food to make at home?

Mikey: Oh lordy, that is a tough one, I would have to say maybe my top two choices would be ceviche or mole. One dish is Peruvian, and the other is Mexican. Just Google pics of them and your mouth will start watering!

*Note, I Googled pictures of them, and my mouth did indeed start watering.*

Vivian: What food would you choose if you were on death row and it was your final meal?

Mikey: Umm, I would never be on death row because I wouldn't do anything to put me there! But if the sky was falling and I had one last meal, I'd have to say I'd eat a shawarma from Zankou Chicken and tres leches cake with guava for dessert...so I'd hope the end of the world would allow me time to fly to California to eat my last meal there.

Vivian: What is your favorite Pie Bar pie to eat?

Mikey: Eaasssyyyyy, Spiced Oatmeal Cookie....or Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Those two I can eat entirely by myself.

Vivian: Why did you choose to work at Pie Bar?

Mikey: Well at the time when I was looking for a job, the post just appeared on Facebook and I was so surprised to see there was a pie place right down the road!! On top of that, pie was very new to me - I was very much a cake person until I worked there.  I'm about to hit a year here and so far things are going great!

Vivian: What is an interesting fact about you?

Mikey: I have a lot of interesting facts about me, but one that I guess pops out is that if you sit next to me while we are all eating and talking, I will unconsciously start picking off of other people's plates. The only reason I know this is because my friend recorded me once in high school and I couldn't believe it!

Vivian: What is your favorite restaurant or shop in Downtown Woodstock?

Mikey: Oh man too many to choose from!! Pure Taqueria has my heart with their margaritas, J. Christopher's breakfast and hot chocolate got me for breakfast, Dulce Artesian Gelato has me for dessert, Canyon's got them delish burgers. Hmm, I'd say Pure, never a wrong time for a margarita!

Vivian: What is a funny anecdote about yourself that you are willing to share?

Mikey: My life has too many stories, I'm such a klutz! So the most recent one that I can think of is that I didn't remember what setting the large mixer was on, so as I'm making the filling for the Peanut Butter Cream pie (which by the way, is very delish) I turned it on and it splattered all over me. Luckily it only lasted for 2 seconds, but those 2 seconds were messy!

Vivian: What are you currently binging on Netflix?

Mikey: Casa de Las Flores - I live for Spanish soap operas and dramas!!
