For many people, Downtown Marietta is a food hub, whether it's grabbing lunch or dinner on the weekend, or visiting for some post-dinner shenanigans - maybe a dessert, or a cocktail or two.
What some may not know is that the Historic Marietta Square is very busy all throughout the day, as well! With Kennestone Hospital and the Courthouse just off of the Square, many local small businesses tend to see local foot traffic throughout the week, too. All this together is part of what makes this community so special - the strong support that is received from all around the area.
As a Marietta local, one of my favorite traditions in the Square is Marietta's Art Walk.
Every First Friday of the month, Marietta puts on the Art Walk: this consists of many artists (near and far) gathering to showcase their work throughout the streets of the Square. Not only will you find visual art in many forms, but you can also enjoy the likes of music, dance, and much more!
While you walk around, be sure to take a look at all the historic buildings on the way. On the Main Square is the historic Strand theater. The Earl Strand Theater opened in 1935. Used as a movie theater during its opening, it is still a functioning theater. Be sure to check them out as they always have a new show running.
Another building that has stood the test of time is the Kennesaw House. This house is located at 1 Depot Street, right on the railroad tracks. It was originally a Cotton Warehouse turned hotel in the early 1800’s and served as the starting point for the Great Locomotive Chase and General Sherman’s Headquarters during his Atlanta campaign.
As you enjoy the art, make sure to take advantage of the many historical markers, grab a bite, a drink, and take it all in!
